ESR12: (POSITION FILLED) Retinal drug delivery with nanomedicines; University of Helsinki (Finland)
At University of Helsinki, we perform research and educate students covering the full width of the academic spectrum. Our campus is located in Viikki on a green, modern campus with state-of-the-art facilities that include pharmaceutical sciences, biotechnology, neuroscience, veterinary medicine, and biosciences. University of Helsinki is internationally recognized member university in LERU (League of European Research Universities).
The Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Helsinki invites applications for the NANOMED European Training Network within Marie Sklodowska Curie Programme. The applications are invited for a
DOCTORAL STUDENT POSITION (Early Stage Researcher 12: Retinal drug delivery with nanomedicines)
In this ESR project, nanomedicines will be investigated in biological context to generate data towards improved ocular drug delivery. Nanoparticles will be formulated, characterized, and their interactions with isolated eye tissues will be studied. The cellular uptake, intracellular kinetics and anti-neovascular effects of the nanomedicines will be investigated with cultured ocular cells. The last parts of the Ph.D. thesis include analyses of tissue distribution and pharmacological anti-neovascular effects of the nanomedicines in laboratory animals. These in vivo experiments utilize advanced imaging methods and the experimental data will be integrated into a computational PK/PD model.
Required background: M.Sc. degree in appropriate field of science (e.g. pharmacy, medicine, chemistry, biology).
Prof. Arto Urtti’s multi-disciplinary research group at University of Helsinki, Faculty of Pharmacy, in Finland, offers a training programme in the field of biopharmaceutical sciences. The group’s target is to build materials for targeted and controlled drug delivery. Research activity involves physico-chemical aspects of the materials and formulations, biological features of drug delivery systems in the cells and tissues, and computational simulation methods to model drug delivery processes in the body. The group has particularly strong expertise in ocular drug delivery and related pharmacokinetics. The NANOMED network will provide training across a wide range of disciplines including biology, pharmacology, chemistry and material sciences, ensuring interdisciplinary and inter-sectoral experience. You will be enrolled in University of Helsinki doctoral programme in drug research and will defend your PhD at the end of the project. The PhD research in Helsinki will be conducted in English. You will perform your PhD research in a multidisciplinary Initial Training Network (ITN) project called NANOMED.
