ESR4: (POSITION FILLED) Polypeptide-based polymersomes; University of Bordeaux (France)
The University of Bordeaux (UB) is a multidisciplinary University counting about 45.000 students and 5630 staff. UB offers 245 curricula leading to national degrees and about 35 international master and doctorate programs. Over the past 15 years, UB has been actively contributing to the strengthening of the European and Higher Education and Research Areas by welcoming more than 6200 foreign students and developing an extensive network of more than 200 partners.
The University of Bordeaux is engaged in challenging programs towards scientific excellence and societal perspectives. The Department of Science and Technology is located in a green and renewed campus with state-of-the-art facilities.
Early Stage Researcher (PhD Candidate) for the NANOMED European Training Network
within the Marie Sklodowska Curie Programme (1,0 fte)
Application deadline: 18 November 2015
The “Laboratoire de Chimie des Polymères Organiques” (LCPO) is a joint research unit of the Bordeaux University, the CNRS and the Bordeaux National Polytechnic Institute. With 150 persons, LCPO focuses its researches on the development of new functional polymers for targeted applications in various fields, like sustainable development, life science and energy. The group « Polymer Self-Assembly and Life Sciences » leaded by Prof. S. Lecommandoux is a very international and multidisciplinary group of about 25 persons, focusing on challenging and innovative research such as (1) the design of polypeptide and polysaccharide based block copolymer assemblies, mainly polymersomes, for smart drug delivery purposes; (2) the design of complex self-assembled nanostructures mimicking viruses or cells; (3) the development of polymer and hybrid nanoparticles formulations, including inorganic nanoparticles for theranostics (solvent displacement, double emulsion, microfluidics). In addition, Lecommandoux’s lab has many collaborations with academic groups and biopharmaceutical companies worldwide.
The NANOMED project will provide training across a wide range of disciplines including biology, pharmacology, chemistry and material sciences, ensuring interdisciplinary and intersectoral experience. You will be enrolled in the Doctoral School of Chemistry of the University of Bordeaux and will defend your PhD at the end of the project. The PhD research will be conducted in English.
Early Stage Researcher 4: Polypeptide-based polymersomes
The task of the ESR is to develop a reproducible and scalable strategy for the design of polypeptide-based polymersomes based polypeptides. Especially, poly(glutamic acid)-based polymersomes will be first synthesized using ring opening polymerization methods. In parallel, the biocompatible but biologically inert poly(glutamate) will be replaced by a hydrophilic and bioactive peptide segment in order to construct in a one-step approach surface-active polymersomes (metallo-protease sensitive and/or targeting peptide). Polymersome formulation, loading and release, and its scalability will be also tested using microfluid devices.
Skills required: polymer chemistry and physical chemistry, nanoscience, colloidal science.
You will perform your PhD research in a multidisciplinary Initial Training Network (ITN) project called NANOMED.
What we expect from you
At the time of recruitment you must be in the first four years of your research career and have not yet been awarded a doctoral degree; You have excellent communication skills and are able to work efficiently in a team. Specific technical requirements are mentioned separately for the individual ESR descriptions. Recruitment is open to all nationalities, but because of mobility rules defined by the EU, at the time of recruitment, candidates must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in France for more than 12 months in the three years immediately prior to the reference date (compulsory national service and/or short stays such as holidays are not taken into account).
What we have to offer
- employment: 1,0 fte;
- the average gross salary is € 2,854 per month;
