ESR10: (POSITION FILLED) Biochemical Characterisation of the Intracellular Uptake of Nanomaterials; Imperial College London (UK)
The Department of Materials at Imperial College London wishes to appoint a postgraduate “early-stage researcher” funded by “Nanomed” (H2020-MSCA-ITN-2015), a Marie Skłowdowska-Curie European Training Network. The successful applicant will carry out a three-year programme of research comprising PhD studies. This post is based within the Biomaterials group at Imperial College London, working under the supervision of Professor Molly Stevens. The Stevens group has received numerous awards for outstanding biomaterials related research and comprises a very international and multidisciplinary group of Research Fellows and PhD students.
The training network is made up of 7 partners and 5 partner organizations, coordinated by the Radboud University in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. The network will recruit a total of 15 postgraduates for project work lasting for 36 months, two of whom will be based at Imperial College London. You will be offered extensive opportunities for collaborative work, both within and external to Imperial College.
The Nanomed consortium is designing and evaluating innovative nanocarriers for therapeutic applications and those in regenerative medicine. This subproject aims to fully characterize these systems in the presence of cells using biochemical assays to elucidate the mechanisms of intracellular uptake. This knowledge will elucidate the potential of the nanocarriers and identify the optimal candidate(s) for their further development, optimization or pre-clinical evaluation.
The funding source requires candidates to have not been resident in the UK for more than 12 months in the past three years, to be in the first four years of their research careers and not in possession of a PhD. Candidates are expected to hold (or to be about to receive) a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Biology, Biomedical Engineering or equivalent, at a level comparable with a UK First Class or Distinction. Knowledge of chemical synthetic protocols and materials science is highly desirable. Candidates must be able to work in an internationally-oriented environment, including fluency in English.

MSCA-ITN eligibility criteria
There are strict eligibility requirements for the ESR PhD positions in MSCA-ITN. Please ensure that you qualify before applying, as ineligible candidates cannot be considered.
- Applicants should not have resided or performed their main activity (work, studies, etc) in the country of the host institution for more than 12 months in the 3 year period immediately prior to the start date of the PhD research.
- Applicants for the ESR PhD positions should be in the first 4 years (full-time equivalent) of their research careers and not yet have been awarded a doctorate. This 4 year period is measured from the date of obtaining the degree which would formally entitle to embark on a doctorate.
MSCA-ITN offers an attractive salary and working conditions. An unique feature of MSCA-ITN is that during the PhD research, ESR PhD students will be given the opportunity to perform at least two secondments of about 3 months each at the facilities of other consortium members. ESR PhD students will benefit from a dedicated training program in the various fields of expertise of the consortium partners. Salary is complemented with a mobility allowance.
